I am a court reporter and it's a great job and despite what people think, it's not a dying profession and most court reporters have way more work then they can handle.
A good place to start researching is the National Court Reporters Association whose website is http://www.ncraonline.org/ because it will tell you more about the job and there is also NCRA accredited schools.
Placement from most court reporting schools is nearly 100%. When I was not even halfway done with school, I already had 4 potential employers knocking on my door. It was great to be able to choose who I wanted to work for!Thinking of studying to be a court reporter any advice?
I worked with a woman that went to school for this and was almost done when the program abruptly closed causing her not to be able to finish. I forget the details. But she wasn't able to transfer her credits for some reason or maybe there wasn't another school in the area. Make sure if you go for it to make sure the school/program is going to be around or ask about options in the event there aren't enough students and the program shuts down.
I know a woman from years past that did this and seemed to be very happy with the program she was in.
I guess you may be working with some unshady people as a court reports (people charged with crimes) so it's something to really consider as well.
edit: The money is the big draw. You'll probably have to do a bit of traveling. You have to be quick and able to learn the codes, etc. It sounds like a great career option.Thinking of studying to be a court reporter any advice?
You can make a very good salary. The Parade magazine recently featured different professions and their salaries and a court reporter was earning $100,000/yr
be sure to find out the placement rate from any schooll you choose
